A DLCer in San Francisco

Why would any political candidate go to a city, with a heavy gay population, asking for money to finance his run for the United States Senate?  Additionally, the city where he's trying to raise money is not in his home state.

Furthermore, you're trying to raise money in one of the most liberal bastions in the country (San Francisco)while your voting record looks like the second coming of Newt Gingrich, even though you're a registered Democrat.

Third, the political heads of San Francisco are backing off your proposed fundraiser, because you voted in favor of a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, as well as voting in favor to retain the PATRIOT act; but you believe San Franciscians are supposed to line your campaign coiffers with cash while you have voted consistently to trash policies they support.

Gingrich (3.00 / 1)

It's really not fair to say that Harold Ford's "voting record looks like the second coming of Newt Gingrich." It's certainly more conservative than I'd like it to be, but Newt he is not.

You make a good point about Ford appealing for money from Democrats whose positions he doesn't support, but it's not like this mess is all his fault. Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris aren't stupid -- they know who Ford is. If they really didn't know what he stands for, that hardly seems to me like his fault. It seems much more likely to me that they didn't think anyone would notice the inconsistency.

And as food for thought, if you think a Tennessee Democrat like Ford is bad, check out the Tennessee Republicans.

At the very least (none / 0)

He can go to Tennessee and have a good comeback if somebody claims he's "too close to the 'radical left'" (it'll happen)..

"Well, if I were close to the radical left, I would have recieved more money from San Francisco"

Hell.. it's Tennessee.. part of me thinks that maybe Ford can be elected because he has "credentials" to deflect charges of "being like Ted Kennedy" and part of me thinks that a bunch of people will vote against him due to his race.

talk about liberal areas (none / 0)

- just south of the bay area - you can't get more liberal than Santa Cruz.

You know, gay rights, while I support them, may be a bit narrow to decide support when you look at the big picture...we are dying over there!

Re: talk about liberal areas (none / 0)

my apologies:  I totally misunderstood ... with all the specifics, like DLC, and trying to figure out who is where - well, I'm not used to having to discern so much.

In this day and age, we can't afford not to check out who is asking for  support, beyond the party affiliation.

Again, sorry I jumped, I should have been listening.

And as we roll towards 2006, look for more hard hitting missives from me regarding the DLC.

I can't believe this guy went to San Francisco trolling for money from gays, and yet, willingly voted for amendments to the constitution to ban gay marriage.  While that plays well in Tennessee, going to California begging for cash with that on your record, well, let's say he didn't handle that well at all.
